Centenary

Takaanini School celebrated it’s 100th centenary on December 9, 2023. It was a fantastic afternoon that brought together 200 plus past and present students and staff.

A powhiri welcomed guests into the school led by Kaumatua Papa Martin Cooper of Ngati Tamoho and the Kapa Haka group.

Guests were able to see how the school has changed over the years, view memorabilia displays and old year books and share memories with friends.

Over an afternoon tea guests had the opportunity to hear from several people including the Honourable Erica Stanford, Minister of Education, Lois Hawley-Simmonds, past teacher, and Charlie Sucich, current Presiding Member of the school board who was also the MC for the day.

Also in attendance were the Honourable Rima Nakhle, MP for Takaanini here, Pem Bird MNZM QSM, Daniel Newman, Auckland Councillor for Manurewa-Papakura Ward, Brent Catchpole Papakura Local Board Chair.

The cake was cut by Pam Scott, who was Pamela Hansen when she attended school here between 1946 and 1952, and current year 1 student Justin See.

On show were the many cultures that make up the current roll of the school with performances from the Kapa Haka, Pasifika Cultural group and Indian students.

Bell ringer of old Greg Pope closed the afternoon with the sound of ringing.
