Takaanini School was established in 1923 and is located in the vibrant suburb of Takaanini, in South Auckland on the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand. We are pūmanawatanga — the beating heart at the centre of our diverse and growing community.
The suburb of Takaanini takes its name from Ihaka Wirihana Takaanini and his son Te Wirihana Takaanini, who once owned land throughout South Auckland — from Te Pane o Mataoho (Mangere Mountain) to Takaanini and beyond. Over time, the local council dropped the second “a” in Takaanini, creating the name Takanini as it is known today.
When Takaanini School first opened in 1923, it was a single building surrounded by citrus orchards. The area was also known for its connection to horse racing — a legacy reflected in our original school logo, which featured a black horse. More than a century later, our kura has grown to a thriving roll of around 600 students. In recent years, we refreshed our logo to better represent our evolving community and our new direction. After extensive research and consultation, a series of design concepts were developed to honour the origins of the Takaanini area in the 1800s and the story of Chief Ihaka Takaanini, the suburb’s namesake.
From Te Aparangi, under the guidance of Chief Takaanini, Māori supplied Papakura and the growing city of Auckland with vegetables and fruit from their gardens and orchards here in Takaanini. The sales of this produce supported the local economy and sustained many whānau.
Beyond the story of trade and industry, we embraced the deeper concept of growth and collective support — values that continue to guide our vision for our ākonga today. The brand marque represents more than just a logo; it symbolises growth, respect, and connection. It reminds our learners that this place has long been one of pride and abundance — and that through teamwork and an engaged, caring community, we can create wellbeing and success for all. The colours of our brand marque draw inspiration from the citrus orchards of our past while celebrating the diversity and vibrancy of our community today. It also reflects our school whakataukī He tina ki runga, he tāmore ki raro - In order to flourish, one must be rooted firmly below.
We continue to grow alongside our community as it evolves, adapts, and thrives, working together to shape a better tomorrow. Our school environment supports this journey, with open spaces for play and connection, well-resourced learning areas, and places that encourage creativity, wellbeing, and care for the environment. Takanini School has an inclusive and supportive culture. It feels warm, welcoming, and a little magical — a place where every ākonga belongs. In partnership with kaiako, tamariki, and whānau, we nurture a learning community grounded in Mātauranga, Manaakitanga, and Whanaungatanga. Our kaimahi live these values through kotahitanga — care, unity, and shared commitment — forming strong home–school relationships.
