At Takaanini School, we are proud to affirm that Te Tiriti o Waitangi remains central to who we are — not because we are required to, but because we believe it is right. Despite recent changes to the Education Act, which remove the legal obligation for school boards to give effect to Te Tiriti, our Board has formally resolved to uphold and strengthen our Treaty commitments now and into the future.
We will continue to:
Honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi as a foundational covenant of Aotearoa New Zealand
Build strong and respectful partnerships with mana whenua, iwi, hapū and Māori whānau
Weave te ao Māori, te reo Māori and mātauranga Māori into teaching, culture and school life
Work towards equitable outcomes for Māori learners, recognising identity as a source of strength
Ensure Treaty considerations are visible in governance, policy, planning and reporting
Our kura is committed to being a place where Māori students can thrive as Māori, and where all ākonga learn to live, lead and contribute in a bicultural nation.
This is not a symbolic stance, it is a living, active responsibility that informs our practice every day.
Nō mātou te whiwhi ki te tautoko i te Tiriti o Waitangi.
We are honoured to continue this work, guided by partnership, protection and participation.
Ngā manaakitanga,
Takaanini Board
